Como é ser uma cientista?
Tell us about your experience as woman and scientist. I am a biologist, and I am mainly interested in the mechanisms that lead to the formation of new species. This involves studying different cases of differentiation, from colour variants within the same population, which could be the beginning of future species, to species that already diverged millions of years ago and are well differentiated. Apart from biology, I also have a passion for numbers that led me to attend a master's degree in data science, which I am about to finish. Being a woman in science is not easy, but I was only recently confronted with these difficulties. The science scene as a man's world was already changing when I started my career, and I never felt undervalued. The difficulties for me only started after I became a mother. Research is like a competitive sport, it requires dedication and constant effort and, in many ways, it is difficult to keep up that pace when you have children. This demand still affects women much more than men, and there is a lot to do to make research fairer and egalitarian, starting by guaranteeing stable and dignified employment for all scientists. Precariousness is like a cloud that constantly hangs over all of us researchers wearing us down. Despite all these struggles, there is nothing more exciting for me than working in science. Every step I take, no matter how insignificant it may seem, contributes to the advancement of knowledge, and discovering things that nobody else knows is an addictive feeling. The willingness to learn something new every day, to question everything and to always have an open mind to different perspectives is, in my opinion, what best defines being a scientist, and "I don't know" is probably the statement I repeat the most! |
Que outra cientista te inspirou?
Tell us about another scientist that has inspired you. One of the scientists I admire the most, both for her unique and courageous path and for the activism she still maintains, is undoubtedly Jane Goodall. She not only broke all kinds of stereotypes regarding women in science, paving the way for the following generations of female researchers, but also revolutionised knowledge in her field, forcing a redefinition of what it is to be human through her studies on chimpanzees. I find not only her academic work inspiring but also the fact that she has long since become one of the most vocal and influential voices for biodiversity conservation and the fight against climate change. |
